Olympic Fever Roars Into Diamond Willow Middle School!
On Friday, January 15, the Olympic spirit rose dramatically as the Olympic Torch arrived in Ponoka. Diamond Willow Middle School (DWMS) was privileged to be chosen as one of the official rest stops for the Olympic torchbearers and Torch relay personnel. In total, there were EIGHT torchbearers at DWMS, prior to the actual torch run. The torch relay people said DWMS was the best stop they had to date! This year the theme for the DWMS Homecourt program is "Olympic Countries”. Students have been studying the history of the Olympic flame, the Vancouver torch, the history of the Winter Olympics, the countries who have hosted the Olympics, and Olympic symbols. DWMS also have a plethora of Olympic displays; library displays, bulletin boards with photos of the January 15 torch relay, plus an Olympic
Wall of Fame, which covers two walls in the school's Centre Court. The Wall of Fame consists of newspaper clippings that are pasted onto a poster size paper, daily, to inform staff and students of the various Olympic events. DWMS Advisory students also made an ice Inukshuk, which proved to be very popular with the public, who had their pictures taken beside it the day of the Torch Relay.
